It is a comedy-drama directed by Youth, starring Akshay Kumar, Mithun Chakraborty, YoYo Sharma and Johnny Lever. The film was shot extensively in China. It released on 16 March 2007 to generally negative reviews from critics but it earned Rs.150 crore at the box office. This is a movie that has many different stories woven together into one larger story of multiple generations of the Indian community in Shanghai since the 1940s during WWII to present day Shanghai where Indians dominate trade and business because of their skills in administration and computing. The film revolves around a number of characters from different walks of life who have migrated to Shanghai to pursue the promise of a better future. The film opens with India's Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru promising independence to China in 1956 after the successful 'War of Liberation' that had been going on for seven decades. The Prime Minister is welcomed by a delegation led by Chinese Premier Zhou Enlai and his wife Madame Mao, who reciprocates the gesture by giving him a red rose. The Prime Minister then asks for a rose from Madame Mao, but she has none to spare; this prompts her husband Zhou Enlai to walk out of the meeting in anger and disgust. It is at the Chinese Premier's residence where we meet Lt. Col. Karamchand Gandhi, a low-keyed inspector in the Indian army who is Nehru's bodyguard and later becomes his confidante and closest friend. He has been ordered to befriend Zhou Enlai and get information about China's nuclear program for India; however, he fails to live up to his task when he encounters Zhou Enlai, who tells him that he is too old and hence unsuitable for any such mission. After tasting defeat Lieutenant Colonel Karamchand Gandhi decides to lay low for a while and find a mission that will suit his age and physical limitations. He ends up as a physical instructor at a local school, where he teaches martial arts. Here, we meet Guruji (Johnny Lever), the master of four styles of martial arts and a master marksman and sharpshooter. How Guruji becomes the student of Lieutenant Colonel Karamchand Gandhi and how his relationship with his son Raju (Mithun Chakraborty) is affected forms the crux of the story. In 1942, we meet Baba Hardev Singh (Rishi Kapoor), an Indian soldier who has become an officer in his army. He arrives in China as part of an Indian expeditionary force to fight for China against the Japanese army led by General Iwane Matsui. Both have a common enemy – the Japanese – and they develop a deep bond of friendship that lasts through the years. The movie then shifts to 1979, where we meet a young boy named Raju who is a school drop out living off his father's earnings as a taxi driver. During a trip with his father, he meets Sunita Rani (Yo Yo), an Indian girl from the same village as him. He is smitten by her beauty and they become playmates.
